The Ocean Missions: Monitoring plastic pollution in Iceland
Few winters ago, found myself a member of a small team on an extraordinary mission. As a passionate adventurer with a keen focus on sustainability and environmental advocacy, this journey promised not only the thrill of exploration but also a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the challenges our oceans face and the efforts being made to address them.
Our destination: the vast expanse of ocean between Iceland and Greenland.
Our mission: a multifaceted exploration dedicated to environmental research.
While collecting water samples to assess plastic pollution and conducting crucial bird counts were key objectives, the spirit of the expedition extended far beyond data collection. We also embraced the opportunity to participate in remote beach cleanups. Yet, the true magic unfolded in the unexpected encounters with local inhabitants – the awe-inspiring spray of a humpback whale breaching the surface, or the curious gaze of an arctic seal. These moments served as profound reminders of the wonders we strive to protect.

The Journey Begins: Setting Sail for the Unknown
Our journey began in Reykjavik, the northernmost capital of the world. Aboard the expedition vessel, guided by a seasoned crew and experienced scientists, we set sail to explore the North Atlantic's remote corners. The beauty of the natural world was both a stark reminder of what we stand to lose and an inspiration to protect it.
Unmasking Plastic Pollution
As we navigated the cold waters, our crew, armed with specialized equipment, conducted regular trawls to assess the extent of plastic pollution in these seemingly pristine waters. The presence of plastic so far from land underscored the scale of this environmental crisis. Unfortunately, even kilometres from the shore and deep in the ocean, our nets were filled with microplastics – tiny fragments whose original form remained a mystery.
Every other day, with the ship securely anchored, the team shifted their focus to the shore. With a rustle of bags and a snap of gloves — prepared for their beach cleanup mission. We relied on a nimble inflatable boat, perfectly suited for accessing even the most remote areas.
We dispersed along the shoreline, each of us armed with a keen eye for the subtle intrusion of plastic debris. Every bottle cap, tangled fishing line, and weathered plastic container told a story of human impact on the environment. At the conclusion of every cleanup, we measured the size of the area we scanned and weighed all the plastic "treasures" we found. This information was invaluable material for the global plastic cleanup database.
Advocating for Change: The Journey Continues
Sailing aboard the Schooner Opal with its innovative hybrid electric engine felt like navigating a bridge between eras. It was a testament to how cutting-edge technology can seamlessly blend with the timeless allure of wind-powered voyages. The Opal exemplified how exploration and sustainability can work hand-in-hand.
My Iceland trip continues to shape my perspective on travel and environmental responsibility.
