My Favorite Hiking Gear

In this post, I would like to share my top 15 essential (or actually pretty non-essential) items I carry with me during my hikes, which I can't imagine living without now. I'm the type of person who loves testing new products, materials and brands, so this list will likely get updated — this is version 1.0 from March 2024. ☄️

  1. Luci Candle: Solar-powered, flame free. A fake candle serves multiple purposes, from illuminating the tent to creating a cozy atmosphere or deterring (or attracting?!) curious creatures in remote areas. 🌲🦦

  2. Adventure Menu: There's nothing quite like the feeling of enjoying a hot meal at the end of a hike; it's something to always look forward to. Adventure Menu is tasty, easy to prepare, and made in the Czech Republic. It's something I often recommend to other hikers who may be unfamiliar with the brand. My favorite is the Tikka Masala with Basmati Rice.

  3. Merino Wool Clothing: I swear by merino wool clothing for its comfort and versatility. Look for brands like Icebreaker, Devold or Houdini, known for their transparent sourcing and commitment to sustainability.

  4. Darn Tough Socks: I bought them in 2023 and became my favorite item. They are comfortable and with cute original designs. Bonus — lifetime warranty.

  5. Peak Design Capture Clip: I own a Peak Design camera clip (the strap is next on my list!) for easy access to my camera while hiking. It's a practical tool that facilitates taking more pictures, eliminating the hassle of constantly removing the camera from the backpack.

6. Jetboil: Despite its faulty igniter, my Jetboil stove remains a favorite for quick and easy cooking on the trail. Additionally, it can boil water in no time (few seconds!).

7. Julbo Sunglasses: I find eye protection to be very important, so I opted for the popular Julbo Fury sunglasses with reactive lenses that I can use during various sports such as cycling and running, as well as during hikes or in urban settings.

8. Salomon Sense Ride: While Salomon Sense Ride shoes may lack durability under heavy use, they offer comfort and stability for most terrains. Great for running but also long-distance (light and mild) trekking. I am on my third pair. 👟

9. Brekkie combo: I enjoy kickstarting my day with a satisfying combination of coffee and oat porridge. Slow mornings, even on the trail, set the tone for an enjoyable day ahead. My favorite is the buckwheat porridge from Semix, as I find it less sweet and more filling than other brands.

10. Opinel: A reliable knife is indispensable for various tasks during hikes. I must admit, I bought mine solely because of its design, featuring an engraved marmot under a mountain.

11. Patizon G800: I needed a sleeping bag that could adapt to various conditions, and this was my choice as I wanted to support a local brand. Yes, sometimes it's too warm for summer adventures and too cold for higher altitudes, but overall, it's comfortable, and I love snuggling into it.

12. Thermarest Z-lite: A lightweight and durable seating pad perfect for quick breaks on the trail. For colder conditions, I combine it with a an inflatable sleeping pad.

13. Cumulus Down Cover Boots: I got them as a gift and I take them everywhere, as they provide my feet with extra warmth during cool nights in a tent. They can be also used as shoes when staying in a shelter.

14. Houdini BFF jacket: If I can only take one jacket for a trip, I choose this one. It’s a versatile choice offering warmth and protection that is suitable for both outdoor activities and casual wear. Sturdy, yet lightweight.

15. Osprey Aura: This reliable backpack has been my trusted companion for years, capable of carrying heavy loads (15kg + during Alta Via 1) without sacrificing comfort.
