LiveLargeWithLess Part 1 - The Strategy (Wearing 10 Garments for the Entire Summer)
In the summer of 2023, I was chosen by my long-time hero brand, Houdini, to participate in their #LiveLargeWithLess challenge.
The challenge was simple yet profound: to wear only 10 garments throughout the entire summer. It aimed to redefine our relationship with clothing and shed light on the escalating issue of consumerism within the fashion industry. As a city girl who's into many sports, do I really need to buy a new outfit for every activity in my life, and can I "survive" on 10 pieces?
The Challenges and Main Questions:
Limited Wardrobe Options: The primary challenge lay in the restriction of having only 10 garments available. Is it possible to live with a limited wardrobe, and what strategies can be used to plan the outfits?
Identity and Social Expectations: Society often imposes expectations regarding our appearance, pressuring individuals to showcase a different look each time we step out. We all identify through the clothes we wear, and our personal style shapes our identity - whether we like it or not. How will it feel to be limited with options?
Laundry Juggling and Other Practical Stuff: With a limited wardrobe, the need for frequent laundry became something to keep in mind. How does one navigate outfit repetition while maintaining comfort and practicality?
Outfit check during my trip to Copenhagen. Stylish and elegant enough to be worn in the capital of architecture — but I wore the exact same outfit when hiking 120km across the Dolomites.
How to Build Your Own 10-Garment Summer Wardrobe:
Selecting only 10 garments for a summer wardrobe requires a thoughtful approach. Before you put together your list, don't forget to tailor your choices to your daily activities and weather. If your summer involves formal events, ensure you have appropriate attire available (or exclude it from your list and rent it when necessary!).
My Top 5 Strategies When Curating a Minimalist Summer Wardrobe:
Versatility and Comfort: Prioritize comfort and choose garments that can be mixed and matched easily to create various outfits. Opt for neutral colors and classic styles that can transition seamlessly from casual to formal occasions.
Seasonal Appropriateness: Consider the climate and activities you'll engage in during the summer. Lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or Tencel are ideal for staying cool in the heat. My favorite is lightweight merino because you can wear it for days and it doesn’t smell.
Layering Pieces: Include options for cooler evenings or outdoor activities. A lightweight sweater, a functional jacket, or a merino shirt can add functionality to your wardrobe.
Multi-Functional Pieces: Look for garments that can serve multiple purposes. For example, a long shirt dress that can be dressed up or down, or shorts that can be worn casually to work or paired with trail shoes for training.
Accessories: Use accessories strategically to diversify your looks. A couple of statement pieces, such as scarves, hats, or jewelry, can add flair to even the simplest outfits.
